Plumas Golf 2014

logoA few weeks ago I attended one of my favorite pre-summer time activities which is an annual golf trip outing to the Reno, Nevada area.  I am a relatively new-comer compared to the rest of the gang that joins this event.  I’ve been attending only for the past 4-5 years while the event itself celebrated the 20th anniversary this year.  I’m so blessed and privileged for these guys to continually invite me back as we always have such great fun and it’s a terrific few days of relaxation and to escape the rat-race of the business environment.

The tournament is a well organized four days of activities which includes a lot of golfing and, of course, socializing (which is my favorite activity frankly).  It’s typically a group of 50-75 guys that rent out a few four-bedroom vacation condimiums for the extended weekend.  For this year’s event we played three consecutive days.  The first day we played at Plumas Pines Golf Course (http://www.plumaspinesgolf.com/).  The next day we played at Whitehawk Ranch Golf Club (http://www.golfwhitehawk.com/).  And then the last day we played a best-ball format at Plumas Pines again.  Although it was the same course, playing the best-ball (a.k.a. “scramble format”) made it different, interesting and fun.

#Winning and a Man-Down

Tv with namesWhile the first two days of golf is certainly fun, every year my particular group really likes to focus-in on the Sunday, best-ball, scramble event.  This is where we typically shine and this year we did not disappoint!  Ever since I’ve been attending this event we have had a consistent group of the same four guys but this year one of our dear members could not make the tournament, unfortunately due to other obligations, so we had to truck-on without him in his honor as he would have encouraged.  None of the three guys, including me, in our group is a great golfer but somehow, for whatever reason, we seem to come up with a great shot in the best-ball format.  It was amazing and we shared the first place prize for the 2014 Scramble event!

It’s a strange cRoger swingingompetitive dynamic that my group of three golfers possesses.  We are are reasonable people and not overly competitive but our commonality is that we each to do our best.  This particular format is fun because all golfers encourage each other to make a good shot, and I guess that’s where my threesome of golfers is so successful.  We sincerely want each other to success and it’s genuine.  While we might poke-fun of each other a bit as we play the round but the teamwork of the group really is evident in the results look at these guys.  My team seems to really shine at the right time and that’s quite rewarding to participate in such great coordinated teamwork.

Heaven in the Hills

sardine lakeThis particular year our fearless organizer, Ed, sprung a wonderful surprise on us.  On Saturday evening he had the whole group of us gather in the parking lot of the Whitehawk Golf Course.  We had no idea what to expect.  All he shared with us is that we would have to drive somewhere.  So about 20-30 cars and trucks caravanned on our way to who-knows-where.  You must remember that the area we were in at the time was extreme wilderness so we had no idea what we were in-for.

A little bit of fancy in the wild outdoors

sardine lake dinner menuAfter a little bit of a drive, and going extremely into the back woods, we arrived at the beautiful Sardine Lake (http://www.sardinelakeresort.com/index.html).  It was absolutely gorgeous!  It’s a relatively small lake but it’s situated in the most awesome of environments in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.  For about an hour or so after we arrived at the Lake in our vehicles, the group spent this time enjoying the wonderful weather, beautiful environment and friendly conversations.  But after a long day of golf, it was time for us burly guys to eat!  And eat we did!  The restaurant is surprisingly (at least to me because of the extreme location) high-quality and the service was simply outstanding.  Many of us had prime rib however, as you can see from the picture to the right, they served a wide variety of items includes fish, chicken or vegetarian meals.  Sardine Lake is really a great place to go if you are looking for ‘a little fancy’ while you are still in the ‘rugged out doors’.  It is truly a remarkable experience and worth experiencing.

Lucky 21!

golf iconThis year’s event was the 20th consecutive year.  Some of the people, places and faces have changed but these guys have kept the tradition going all these years.  I am already looking forward to next year.  Just when you think you have experienced everything then something new seems to amaze you.  I personally had a wonderful time, once again, at the event and I’m certain that everyone else did as well.  I’m already counting-down the days until the 21st Annual!!!!

1st Annual Jack Brooks Law Cypress Reunion BBQ

This past Saturday, June 14th, Brandee and I along with our good friend Natalie hosted the 1st Annual Jack Brooks Law Cypress Reunion BBQ at Vasona Lake Park.  The collection of great people and conversation was simply amazing!  I cannot thank everyone enough for their participation.

The group was outstanding and was well-representative of the great culture of our Company.  I am so personally proud to have such sincere and long-standing friendships with these people.  Therefore, I would like to highlight some of the fantastic new memories from this event:

A blast from the past – Early days of Law Cypress (Randy Savoy)

savoyA true testament of the great Law Cypress spirit is embodied in a long-time former employee, Randy Savoy.  Randy was the engineering manager even before I started at the Company in 1989.  He is absolutely a wonderful person and overall great guy.  He attended the BBQ with his son, Peter, who it was a great privilege to meet.  At the BBQ Randy shared some hilarious stories from long-ago which really helped to establish a fantastic story-sharing environment.

Although many of us hadn’t seen Randy in-person for many, many years, immediately when he showed up it was just like the old days when we were laughing, sharing stories and having an overall great time.

The longest distance traveled award (Mike Heiden)

mikeTraveling the longest distance to attend the 1st Annual Jack Brooks Law Cypress (LC) Reunion award goes to….drum roll please…..Mike Heiden who drove all the way up from Los Angeles to attend the event!

Mike is the epitome of friends and family for LC.  I personally knew Mike long before he became a LC employee and he was great fun.  I’m glad to report, after not seeing him in a long time, he has built a fabulous life for himself.  Brandee and I, as well as the others at the BBQ I’m sure, seriously enjoyed the conversations with Mike.  It was sincere, refreshing and funny.  Thanks Mike for making the long trip this year!  Next year you are going to have a serious challenge to your longest-distance-traveled award I’m sure.

Comic relief (Carol and Jenny)

carol_jennyAnother great memory from the event was Carol and Jenny, Kylie and Kaylee.  These diva’s know how to rock-the-house and they did not disappoint!  As everyone knows Carol and Jen are the core of the Law Cypress family.  It’s amazing to see that as more things change, the more things stay the same.  And this is certainly the case with our dear friend, Carol.

Going the extra mile (Bob Utley)

25yohThe incredible success of Law Cypress was certainly due to the fact that we had a great bunch of hard working people but a huge part of our success was also because of our terrific partners.  One person in particular that was an extremely important part of the Companies success was Bob Utley of Fujitsu.  Bob is best known for his charming personality and amazing magic talents but he also has fantastic business acumen.

It was a great pleasure to get to spend some time with Bob and his wife, Elisabeth, reminiscing about all the terrific times we’ve enjoyed together.  A very special treat at the BBQ was Bob performing several magic tricks for the children.  Although the target audience was the kids, I can tell you for a fact that the adults were also quite impressed with Bob’s amazing talent.

Bob’s positive contribution to the Law Cypress family is long-standing and much appreciated.  He was never an official Law Cypress employee but he is, without a doubt, one of the family forever!  Thanks Bob!

A friend of the Law Cypress family (Jim Hughes)

westint_logoAs a distributor of computer products, true success at Law Cypress could not have happened if it weren’t for our fantastic reseller and technology partners and there is no better representative of this group then Mr. Jim Hughes of Western Integrated Systems.  Jim is an icon in the industry and I was so personally honored to have him join us.

jim hughes photoJim always has great stories and experiences to share.  It is really fun to hear him tell his colorful tales.  Sometimes I think he might exaggerate just a bit (or a lot a bit) but the ‘bigger’ and more ‘fishy’ the tales get makes them all that better.

As an animal lover, Jim brought to the BBQ his two precious six-year old dogs to enjoy the park.  Being an animal lover myself naturally I wanted to introduce myself to his dogs but I was quickly warned by Jim to keep my distance.  Jim, being the consummate practical-joker that he is, was dismissed by myself as being a joke so I extended my hand to pet his dogs.  Naturally I did not believe that Jim truly had these vicious dogs and boy-o-boy was I wrong!  I’m glad to report that I still have all my fingers in-tact;  but barely.  Jim, I can never tell whether you are serious or not so thanks for always keeping me on my toes!

A Jack Brooks protégé (Ivan Bermudez)

ivan bbqWhat would a ‘Jack Brooks’ event be without a little discussion about Jack’s proud football history as a great coach?  One of Jack’s star football players, long-time friend and one of many ‘sons’, Ivan Bermudez, made an appearance.  Yes, I said ‘appearance’.  You see, Ivan is a legend in his own mind and his time is precious so anyone getting to see him is a great pleasure.  Actually, I kid.

Ivan shared some great stories and memories of all the fantastic JB times.  He probably knows Jack as well as anyone and it was fabulous to hear Ivan’s retrospect on Jack as a person, husband, co-worker and friend to everyone.  Ivan, I would like to thank you, again, for sharing such awesome memories!

Studs-R-Us and the ‘new gen’ of Law Cypress (Freddy Bermudez)

freddy bbqIvan’s cousin, Freddy, another ex-Law Cypress employee, arrived with Ivan at the BBQ.  Freddy had been associated with Law Cypress for a long time through his relationship with Ivan as well as friendship with many other LC employees.  Eventually I think Jack just made it official and hired Freddy on as an employee.  Jack was notorious for hiring ‘lost individuals’ and Freddy embodied this spirit extremely well.  *Just kidding Freddy*.

Freddy was a great addition to the LC team and his friendship is appreciated to this day.  At the BBQ Freddy enjoyed discussing his massive biceps, huge chest and thick neck with anyone that would listen.  I’m looking forward to seeing Freddy again.  See you see bro!

The secret ingredient behind the scenes (Natalie)

natalie_bbqI’ve mentioned Natalie a few times in this blog and now I would like to call her out specifically.  Natalie is a dear friend of Brandee and mine.  We have known each other for many years.  She is the proudest mommy ever to her beautiful daughter and watching them together is pure magic.

Natalie helped organize the BBQ event with Brandee.  Natalie (a.k.a. “Nat”) had a previous commitment that she had to attend later in the day so she couldn’t stay the whole time but, as she always does, stayed to help as much as she could.  Nat, and her ham-for-a-daughter, typically keeps us tremendously entertained by singing the Frozen song over and over, are two of the most terrific people you will ever find in your life.  Nat and Cookie – You are A+!

 Jack-Buddy!

For those whom worked with Jack they know that one of his infamous phrases to utter was ‘so-and-so buddy!’.  So, as a final tribute and until next year, Jack-buddy! – looking forward to celebrating in your spirit next year!

jack with dogs

In all seriousness, Jack was absolutely a great people person and gave so many young kids opportunities to grow, learn and experience life without excessive coddling.  In spite of his tough exterior he was a man of great values, as many of you reading this already know.

It was such a fantastic honor for us to host this event in Jack’s wonderful memory but also a great celebration of the Law Cypress spirit.  I seriously cannot wait until next year!  Speaking of which….

Next year’s event is already in-the-making (Lynn Law)

Brandee, Natalie and I would like to extend our greatest gratitude to the entire Law family for attending the event.  In particular it was tremendous to spend time chatting with Lynn.  She has graciously agreed to organize next year’s event already.  So everyone get your creative thinking-caps on and start sharing your interesting ideas for the 2015 BBQ!

Your input is requested

As we plan out for next year I think a more organized approach would be to use technology!  Yes, believe it or not, technology is our friend and many of us are in the technology business so we want to eat our dog-food *so-to-speak*.

Therefore, I am requesting that you contribute something virtually to this past event, as well as future events, by commenting, liking or suggesting something.  Your input in valuable and we want to take the spirit of Jack as well as the vision of LC into this next era with passion and pride so please contribute something!

A Neal Family furry children update

jackbella

As Brandee and I were having dinner tonight our two furr-ball children began their typical ‘food encroachment’ activities.  Although both of our children are well-fed and taken care-of, they have instinct to beg for food.  Anyhow it occurred to me that I should supply an update on the happenings of Isabella Neal, our nearly 11 year old orange blood-thirsty daughter, and Jackson Neal, our nearly 7 year old black high-energy son.

It’s amazing what joy the last 10+ years have brought us.  First with our daughter, Bella, who was an orange nearly hairless (hard to believe) little kitty.  She was so small and fragile that just getting her healthy was our main priority.  Little did we know that she would not only become healthy, but she would rule the entire house.  The truth of the matter is that she is the boss.

Bella is a huge furr!

bella with furrsBella doesn’t wander too far from home any longer.  She typically hangs out either in our backyard on the cool grass or she is inside the house with us.  In her youth she would be gone the entire day and only show up for meals.  In fact Bella was so wild that we would have to lock her in the house to avoid her leaving and causing too much ruckus in the neighborhood!  These days she is more conservative but she still has an occasional wild streak so humans should be aware of her instant ability to draw blood within seconds.

Jack – A great hunk-o-doggy

jack xmasOver the past few years Jack has grown from a little puppy into a terrific, full-grown doggity-dogg!  In fact while I’m trying to write this very update about him in particular, he thinks he’s still this little 25lbs guy instead of a 80lbs mammoth and wants to lean on me.  Jack; sit!

Jack enjoys activity and he’s always got to be the center of attention.  We have taken Jack camping, car-traveling and shared all of our experiences with him.  Jack is way overprotective of his sister and he is always well behaved.

In particular I am so proud of him with small children.  As you can see from the photos, Jack is not a small guy and I would assume that he might be mean given that he is some sort of Rottweiler, Labrador mix.  However, Jack is absolutely trustworthy with young children.  Brandee and I have several friends with infants or young children and we love to have these people to our home for visits.  Jack is always such a gentleman and kind with babies or your children.

The kids care

I’m glad to report that Jack and Bella are absolutely a great brother-sister combo.  They spend nearly all of their time together because they want to.  These kids are certainly an odd combination but it works well and I hope that each one of them is so happy beyond belief (which I think they are).  The only thing in this world that we want to do for Bella and Jack is to give them the best in the world.

It’s amazing to me how much my furr-children really are my kids.  I often get good natured teasing about how often I post pictures and/or updates about ‘my children’ on Facebook.  All I say to them is — My kids have furr!

Extreme Golf and More Extreme Camping

As I mentioned in my previous post, Brandee and I have a busy Summer 2014 planned; and Summer is still one and a half months away!  However, it got off to a great start this past week and weekend.

LaCosta

Omni La Costa Resort

The fun started when I made a business trip starting this past Sunday to the luxurious Omni La Costa Resort in beautiful Carlsbad, California.  The schedule was to include three straight days of golfing on world-class golf courses.  While I do like golfing every-so-often I admittedly get bored quickly, become lazy with my shots and generally don’t enjoy myself after playing so many consecutive days but these three rounds were different.

Golf – and a lot of it!

aviara 14th hole

Aviara Golf Club – 14th Hole

The first golf round we enjoyed was Aviara Golf Club which was a short drive from our hotel.  Aviara is quite famous in the golf circuit for hosting the recent Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Kia Classic in March 2014.  This is an extreme high-quality golf course which takes enormous skills to play.  The course was full of beautiful scenery with wonderful waterfalls on many holes.  The putting greens were insanely impossible because they were too fast to stop the ball and every putt had difficult twists and turns to navigate.  Aviara was fun but I’m glad we only played it the one day or else I would have lost all my golf balls and not had any for the rest of the week! :-)

Aviara Golf Club

The next two days we played golf at La Costa.  They have two courses.  One is the Champions Course and the other is the Legends Course.  The first of the two days playing the La Costa courses was on the Champions Course.  I think I played fairly decent and ended up shooting a 105 score which is about my average however this course was much more challenging than what I typically play.  So, not too bad all-things considered.

lacosta red flowers omni lacosta orange flowers with butch

Day two of playing the La Costa courses was on the Legends Course and this was a ‘best ball’, ‘scramble’-type format.  Instead of everyone playing their own golf ball for each whole, the group of four all takes a shot and then everyone plays from whatever the best shot the group likes.  This is a really fun format of golf to play.  It makes the round go quicker and everyone gets a chance to contribute.  Personally, I sincerely enjoyed my group because we all did truly contribute equally so it wasn’t one person doing all the work.  Also, and I can say without any doubt what-so-ever, we talked the most trash of any other group so if there were a prize for that we would have certainly won!

Kick-off to Camping 2014!

camping 05_09_14

Henry Cowell State Park

So after a full week of golfing, socializing and participating in various events what is probably the dumbest thing one could do?  Go immediately camping, of course!

A fellow colleague had planned the years first camping trip to Henry Cowell State Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains starting on the Friday that I was returning from my business trip.  Brandee and I had so much fun camping with these same people last year that I committed to going although I knew I would be tired.  No Rest for the Wicked I reckon.

Brandee picked me up from the airport at around noon.  She, as usual, had everything perfectly prepared so we loaded up the car, put Jack in the back seat and off we were by 1:30pm.  How is that for a quick turn around?

We arrived at the camp site first and had everything setup within an hour.  Around 4pm or so it started to get a bit chilly and windy.  Since, when we left San Jose, the weather was so warm and nice that both Brandee and I were dressed in t-shirts and shorts.  We started a fire and got out some snacks to relax and wait for our friends to show up at the camp site.  As the weather got cooler the conversation turned to adding a layer of clothing or getting some jackets.  That’s when the reality of our camping challenges for the first trip of the year started to set-in.  Little did we know it would get much worse.

You see with so much activity through-out the week I just hadn’t really considered how cool it may get in the Santa Cruz Mountains.  Brandee asked explicitly if we should bring jackets and warm clothes and I laughed it off as crazy because we had been experiencing 80-90 temperatures.

Nevertheless we were determined to be troopers and tough-it-out.  Our fellow campers showed up in the early evening and we had a pleasant chat around our campfire.  Them in their warm jackets with hoodies, myself in shorts and a t-shirt with Brandee in her t-shirt and Tinkerbelle pajamas!  Brandee and I were nearly in the fire itself trying to heat out bodies.  We were as close as could be without getting burned.  After the nice chat with our friends it was time to head to the tent in the hopes that snuggling under the blankets would provide some relief from the cold.  It didn’t work out too well.

After several hours of Brandee, Jack and I snuggling as close as could be on the cold air-mattress, with few blankets in the 41 degree temperatures we all finally had to go to the restroom.  It was around 5am and pitch dark.  The restroom was a little bit of a hike so we decided to take my car for the short drive.  Immediately on entering the car we cranked up the heat.  Game-over for heading back to the tent!  After defrosting for a bit we were so warm in the car there was not a chance that we were ever going back into the freezing tent.

Jack Tired - He's Out

Jack Tired – He’s Out

It was still too early and dark to clean up our camping equipment and head home so Brandee, I, and even Jack, made the obvious decision that upon daybreak we would breakdown camp and head home.  We felt horrible that we couldn’t explain the situation to our fellow campers before we left but they must surely have understood the circumstances.  We stayed in the car, with the heat on, until the sun started to rise around 5:45am.  Needless to say by 6am we were completely done dismantling the camp site and on our way home.  Overall it was another fun, albeit short, camping experience.  We will right this one off as ‘preseason preparation’ for the real upcoming Summer Camping 2014 Season.

Looking forward to the next camping trip with our friends!
