{"id":1494,"date":"2014-04-05T11:25:54","date_gmt":"2014-04-05T18:25:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/?p=1494"},"modified":"2014-04-05T14:30:45","modified_gmt":"2014-04-05T21:30:45","slug":"kevins-birthday-surprise-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/kevins-birthday-surprise-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Kevin\u2019s Birthday Surprise 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Kevin\u2019s Birthday Surprise 2014<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fairmont.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1497\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" alt=\"fairmont\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fairmont.png\" width=\"212\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fairmont.png 2048w, https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fairmont-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fairmont-1024x688.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a>So Brandee decided to sweep me away recently for my birthday.\u00a0 When it comes to birthday time I usually get grouchy because, after-all, what\u2019s the point of aging another year without any tangible benefits?<\/p>\n<p>Basically between the age of 21 (when you can legally drink) and the age of 65\/67-ish (when you can supposedly collect your retirement money) then what\u2019s the use of growing older?<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Brandee pulled a wonderful surprise for me and it was very special.\u00a0 She had arranged a full evening and night at the San Jose Fairmont Hotel.\u00a0 This is not your Motel 6-type facility.\u00a0 Rather it\u2019s a classy, high-price establishment where U.S. Presidents and other famous people stay.<\/p>\n<p><b>Let\u2019s have a pop to begin<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/drinks.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1498 alignright\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" alt=\"drinks\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/drinks.png\" width=\"206\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/drinks.png 717w, https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/drinks-224x300.png 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a>The night began with her insisting that we have drink(s) in the hotel lounge area.\u00a0 First of all this was very suspicious because she never drinks.\u00a0 Second of all the amount of booze she consumed was impressive so I knew something was up because this was seriously unusual behavior for her.\u00a0 However, not sure exactly what was going on; I rolled with it.<\/p>\n<p>It was a lovely lounge with beautiful decorations, nice artist displays as well as great service by the hotel employees.\u00a0 Overall I have to say that the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose is Five Star for this reason; they have great service!<\/p>\n<p>After a few drinks in the lounge Brandee suggested that we have dinner.\u00a0 A wonderful idea but the restaurant wasn\u2019t fully staffed when we arrived just as they opened for business.\u00a0 So we decided to head to the bar for a bit and wait for our table to become available.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Feast begins<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/food.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1500\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" alt=\"food\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/food.png\" width=\"206\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/food.png 717w, https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/food-224x300.png 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a>The bar area was extremely nice.\u00a0 There was plenty of room to get our groove-on so Brandee and I waited about 30 minutes and our reserved table was never called.\u00a0 This was perfectly fine with us actually and eventually Brandee went and cancelled our formal restaurant reservation because we were perfectly content in the bar and could still order off the full menu.<\/p>\n<p>In there we had bread with accompaniments of whole butter, tomato jam and an herbed olive oil and aged balsamic dip.\u00a0 We also had Sliced New York Pepper Steak with Bacon, Cracked Pepper &amp; Onions, Topped with a Green Peppercorn Sauce.\u00a0 And just when you think that is too much, we had a gorgeous Charcuterie board for us to snack on. Toasted Levian, Stilton, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, Nicoise olives, amazing Prosciutto, Sopressata, house-made whole grain mustard and candied spiced walnuts.\u00a0 OMG \u2013 it was delightful!<\/p>\n<p><b>Heeerrre\u2019s Johnnie!!!!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/johnny.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-1501\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" alt=\"johnny\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/johnny.jpg\" width=\"206\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/johnny.jpg 717w, https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/johnny-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a>Since Brandee knew that I clearly hate to celebrate my birthday and she had such elaborate plans, she probably knew she was skating on thin-ice with my patience.\u00a0 This was absolutely true and she decided to step it up a notch, like you wouldn\u2019t expect a reasonable person to do, but she did.<\/p>\n<p>I guess at some point while I was checking my Facebook to make sure that my \u2018lovely\u2019 wife wasn\u2019t posting embarrassing photographs she was making a wicked embarrassing deal with the waitress to bring (and sing) birthday cake to my table.\u00a0 Yeah team!<\/p>\n<p>So what do I do?\u00a0 Turn the tables of course.\u00a0 Instead of a nice, innocent smile with gratitude, I give a sarcastic looking smile just exactly like Jack Nicholson on The Shining in the scene where he busts down the door with an axe and declares: \u201cHeeerre\u2019s Johnnie!!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Fantastic Birthday Result<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/bottle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1503 alignleft\" alt=\"bottle\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/bottle.jpg\" width=\"226\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/bottle.jpg 1936w, https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/bottle-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/www.kevinneal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/bottle-764x1024.jpg 764w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a>After Brandee and I had our fill of snacky-food and birthday cake I decided that this old-man needed to hit-the-hay so we headed to our hotel room.\u00a0 When we opened the hotel room door I was surprised by not one, but two, sets of chocolate\/strawberry and wine\/champagne arrangements!\u00a0 Apparently Brandee had already arranged one set with her friend and then another was provided by one of our mutual friends.\u00a0 Needless to say, we were not thirsty for delicious drink or fantastic fruit the rest of the night or early morning :-).\u00a0 Champagne, strawberries and chocolate on a lazy Sunday morning is something all of you should experience on your bucket-list.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>In the end, and through all the personal suffering, I had a great weekend and it\u2019s because people made it happen.\u00a0 I want to personally thank Brandee (of course) and also many others including Natalie, Cookie, Jonathan and Steve for making such a great memory.\u00a0 You are all the greatest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kevin\u2019s Birthday Surprise 2014 So Brandee decided to sweep me away recently for my birthday.\u00a0 When it comes to birthday time I usually get grouchy because, after-all, what\u2019s the point of aging another year without any tangible benefits?
